Description
As Chinese export trade with the West expanded in the 1830s, bound albums of watercolor and gouache paintings of butterflies, birds, and flowers became inexpensive souvenirs purchased by travelers. Chinese artists used vivid colors and selected images that would appeal to Westerners. This "Oriental style" was quite different from the subdued palette of English amateur artists (usually women) who painted watercolor sketches of flowers found in their gardens.
