Description
With the annexation of Hawaiÿi by the United States in 1898, the American Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 applied to Chinese immigration to Hawaiÿi. Chinese residents of Hawaiÿi desiring to visit China were required to have certificates of residence in order to return to Hawaiÿi. Each certificate includes a photograph of the individual man, woman, or child; and his or her name, age, local residence, occupation, height, eye color, complexion, and identifying marks. Some of the certificates are of family members, as these of mother Chang Hoo Shee and infant daughter Chang Sum.
