This fragment from a Book of Hours dedicated to the contemplation of the Virgin is an important example of the decorative woodcut borders and type design of Geoffory Tory. It continues, in printed form, the Medieval and Renaissance tradition of hand-illuminated manuscripts. In 1568 Pope Pius V decreed that this type of devotional material no longer be used by the clergy.
