A treaty port in the province of Guangxi opened to foreign trade in 1897 and situated on the left bank of the Xi Jiang(West river) at its junction with the Fu River. The city occupies a location of strategic and economic importance because it dominates the principal route between Guangxi and southwest China as well as the Guangzhou area along the coast.
