Like many other botanists of his era, Nehemiah Grew was trained as a physician. Grew and Marcello Malpighi from Italy, another physician, were the first to conduct serious studies of plant anatomy with the microscope. The Anatomy of Plants is a compilation and revision of Grew's previous works and was an important botanical reference for more than a century.
