Produced in France, 1440: ink, color and gold on vellum. Prior to Johann Gutenberg's invention of the moveable-type printing press in the 1450s, religious manuscripts were copied and illuminated by hand. Books were rare and only the Catholic Church and the wealthy could afford to own them.
