Engineering in the 17th century attempted to replicate the movement of man. Machines were designed to benefit daily work. Bockler's book illustrates the theory and application of perpetual motion machines. Although at this time few people in Europe were literate, the graphic content in Bockler's copperplate engravings could be easily understood.
