This work is one of the great encyclopedic compilations in ichthyology, the natural history of fish. Bloch gathered information about every fish species that he had seen, every specimen that he could purchase, and when a specimen was not available he looked for drawings. His scope was truly global; however, the descriptions and plates of fish, particularly East Indian and American fishes for which he relied on others, vary in accuracy.
