Edward Weston encouraged his lover Tina Modotti to become a photographer. In early 1923 they made an agreement that he would teach her photography and she would work as his assistant. They moved to Mexico in August where Modotti made portraits of their friends, including Jean Charlot. After Weston left Mexico Modotti remained to work on commercial assignments.
