Broadside, engraving, verso. The popular Mexican artist Jose Guadalupe Posada produced religious handbills to address what his publisher perceived as a lack of Christian morals. Sales of the prints would increase respect for the crucified Christ, the Virgin Mary and the saints who were regarded as potent sources of divine mercy. The stories on the verso told of the wonders of miracles or of human transgressions and the punishments incurred by sinners. The story on the reverse tells of a selfish and ungrateful son who refused to give corn to his ailing parents. In weakness and hunger, his parents departed on the long journey to the shrine of the Lord of the Hospital where they were miraculously healed. When the son went to his granary, he found that all his corn had become worms. The handbill admonishes children to help their parents and then reap God's rewards.
