As an artist in an expedition up the Mekong River into the interior of China in 1866 to 1868, Delaporte participated in an endeavor that allowed the West to become aware of vast reaches of northern Southeast Asia and southwest China. In 1873 he returned to Indochina to lean an exploration of Khmer ruins. His discoveries and publications helped to reconstruct the little-known history of ancient Cambodia.
