In 1792 British Captain George Vancouver set out for the northwest coast of America to claim the territory at Nootka Sound which, in a controversy with Spain, had been assigned to England. For three years he explored and surveyed the Pacific Northwest and made three visits to Hawai`i to survey the Sandwich Islands. The relative accuracy of this map exemplifies the amount of study and charting that had been conducted by European explorers in the 13 years following Captain Cook's arrival.
