Description

Captain James Cook's three voyages, being explicitly scientific rather than political, established a model for future explorations. Artists who accompanied the voyages made extensive drawings and paintings of the regions they visited and naturalists brought back collections of plants, animals, and ethnographic artifacts. Three volumes and one atlas comprise the official account of Cook's third voyage. Sixty-one engravings based on drawings by the expedition's artist John Webber include twelve plates relating to Hawai'i. This work documents in writing and illustration important aspects of life in Hawai'i at the time of first European contact.
