Description
Baron Jules Paul Benjamin Delessert, an avid collector of shells, employed Louis Kiener as curator of his collection. Kiener embarked on a life-long quest that resulted in ten monographs that deal with marine shells organized by class. Many of the hand-painted illustrations are the earliest depictions of rare shell species. Though the scientific value of some of the illustrations was compromised by Kiener's artists for the sake of more beautiful renderings, Kiener's publication is a major contribution to the study of mollusks.
