Karl Friedrich Philipp von Martius, a German botanist famous for his work in Brazil, was recognized as the foremost palm expert of his time. He and zoologist Johann Baptist von Spix were selected by Maximilian Joseph I, king of Bavaria, to participate in a scientific expedition to Brazil. After three years of exploration he returned to Munich in 1820 with over 6,500 herbarium specimens. The three volumes of Historia Naturalis Palmarum took over 30 years to complete.
