Description

James Edward Smith, the son of a wealthy merchant, was pursuing a medical degree in London when his friend, the famous Sir Joseph Banks, advised him to purchase Linnaeus' library and herbarium. His possession of the Linnaean collections gave Smith considerable international standing in the scientific society of his era. He became a founder and first president of the Linnaean Society of London. Smith and his friend, the famous botanical artist James Sowerby (1757-1822), who was also a scientist and an accomplished engraver, worked together on several illustrated botanical works.
