Description

The thirteenth Earl of Derby engaged the artist Edward Lear to illustrate the birds and animals of his large private menagerie at Knowsley Hall. For Gleanings, hand-colored lithographs were made from 17 of Lear's paintings. The naturalist John Gray provided the text that accompanied the brilliant plates. Gleanings continues to be cited in scientific literature because of the rare species first described in this publication. Lear is most known for his Book of Nonsense (1846) which he created for the Earl's grandchildren.
