Lead editorial describes the first issue struck off, 1,000 copies, the first of which went to Barnum W. Field, second to Capt. Thomas Spencer, third to Capt. B.F. Snow. By the end of the day, they were gone. List of advertisers then given. Location of the newspaper shop on Merchant St. opposite Bishop Bank. The masthead vignette was sketched by Henry M. Whitney form the masthead of a guano clipper in 1855 at anchor near the bell buoy. The sketch was sent to Boston where it was engraved and electrtyped. Has been in use ever since.
